Comparison of recurrence rate in recurrent pterygium excision with conjunctival autograft and Mitomycin C application

A total of 50 patients between 16 and 65 years of age with recurrent pterygium were operated. Half of the patients were treated with Mitomycin C (MMC) application and half with free conjunctival autograft (CAGT) from the superotemporal bulbar conjunctiva of the same eye and were followed up to 6 months after the surgery. Both of the procedures showed a lower recurrence rate that is 16% with CAGT and 12% with MMC.

Angiographic patterns of various retinal medical diseases in Pakistan

A hospital based observational study was conducted on 13,941 patients presenting at Al Shifa Trust Eye Hospital from 1991 to 2011 who were advised Fundus Fluorescein Angiography. Diabetic retinopathy was the most common problem in 4265(30.59%) patients followed by venous occlusion in 3415(24.49 %) patients. Age related macular degeneration was diagnosed in 2724 (19.54 %) patients. This analysis gives us a general review of the retinal diseases in our population.

Distribution of corneal haze after Photorefractive Keratectomy in myopic eyes

Excimer laser PRK was performed on 118 eyes of sixty patients and cases were followed from three to six months. Haze was graded subjectively on a scale of 1 to 4. At the end of six months after PRK, one (8.34%) eye from low myopia group, 2 (5.71%) eyes from moderate myopia group and 6 (13.96 %) eyes from high myopia group had grade 1 corneal haze. Grade 4 corneal haze developed in 21 (48.83%) eyes in high myopia group. The eyes which underwent single zone PRK required deeper ablations with relatively denser postoperative corneal haze as compared to the eyes treated with multiple zone PRK.

Comparison of efficacy of Ranibizumab versus Bevacizumab in Neovascular Age Related Macular Degeneration

861 eyes of 794 patients were included. Patients in each group got 3 intravitreal anti- VEGF injections and were followed up for six months during which visual acuity and macular thickness on OCT were analysed. Mean macular OCT thickness in Bevacizumab group decreased from 526μm to 261 μm. Mean OCT thickness of macula in Ranibizumab group reduced from 416 µm to 219 μm. There was no significant difference between two groups in terms of final VA and side effects.

Comparative study of non-cycloplegic & cycloplegic objective refraction in hypermetropic patients between 5-15 years of age

100 patients between ages of 5 to 15 years presenting at out-patient department of Benazir Bhutto Hospital Rawalpindi during 1st October 2012 to 31st December 2012 were included in this study. After complete refraction in non-cycloplegic and cycloplegic conditions respectively, complete data was recorded and compared to test the null hypothesis. A significant difference between non-cycloplegic and cycloplegic refraction was observed in 73% children. This study showed that cycloplegic method of refraction is very important in young hyperopic children below 15 years of age.

Choroidal melanoma in a young patient - A case report and mini review of literature

Atypical presentation and unusual age distribution of choroidal melanoma makes the diagnostic elucidation difficult. The authors report a case of primary choroidal melanoma in a 27 years old young male patient who presented to the Department of Orbit and Oculoplastic at Al-Shifa Trust Eye Hospital, Rawalpindi, Pakistan in 2013, being the first case to be reported at this age at Al-Shifa Trust Eye Hospital, Rawalpindi, Pakistan in more than fifteen years.
